- Why do some ingredients have complex chemical names?
Cosmetic ingredients are listed using standardized INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) names. Rather than using simple or marketing-friendly names, the INCI system is designed to identify ingredients clearly and consistently, distinguishing them from closely related substances.
As a result, many names reflect an ingredient's chemical composition, botanical origin, or manufacturing process, which can make them appear technical or unfamiliar. A complex INCI name does not indicate that an ingredient is harsh, synthetic, or unsafe—it simply reflects the standardized way cosmetic ingredients are identified.
- What is the difference between active ingredients and supporting ingredients?
Effective skincare formulations rely on the interplay between active and supporting ingredients. Active ingredients are selected for their direct biological effects on the skin, such as improving hydration, supporting barrier function, reducing visible signs of aging, or addressing uneven skin tone.
Supporting ingredients contribute to the overall performance of a formulation by enhancing stability, texture, delivery, skin compatibility, and sensorial experience.
In modern formulation science, the efficacy of a product is determined not only by individual actives, but by the synergy of the entire formulation system.
- Why do we focus on formulation rather than individual hero ingredients?
While individual ingredients can provide important benefits, the performance of a skincare product depends primarily on the formulation as a whole. Factors such as ingredient concentration, molecular structure, delivery systems, pH, stability, and ingredient synergy all influence the final efficacy and skin compatibility of a product.
For this reason, we view skincare formulations as integrated systems, where each ingredient is selected not only for its individual properties, but also for its contribution to the overall performance, sensory experience, and long-term support of skin health.
